Gnarwhal

Gnarwhal is a heavy alternative fuzz rock band from Yellowknife, Canada, forging a distinct voice in the country’s underground. Since forming in 2022, they’ve been blending sludge, grunge, and progressive metal into a sound that is both immersive and unrelentingly powerful.

Their 2023 self-titled debut earned a Western Canadian Music Award nomination and helped push the band beyond the North. In 2024, they released Altered States, an experimental EP that pushed their sound into spacial, psychedelic, and heavier territory while retaining the low-end punch and emotional depth that defines their music. DIY to the core but ambitious in scope, Gnarwhal has toured across Canada, transforming basements, bars, and proper stages into sweat-soaked sonic assaults. Their live shows are loud, cathartic, and deeply connected to the audience—no frills, no posturing, just riffs, release, and energy.

Their 2026 sophomore LP, Lucid Machines, finds the band sharpening their edge while expanding their sonic palette, weaving together sludge, doom, post-rock, and progressive elements into a cinematic, hypnotic journey. Recognized as one of Exclaim! Magazine’s most anticipated Canadian releases of 2026, the album delivers heavy, melodic, and immersive music that refuses to be predictable. From the subarctic to stages nationwide, Gnarwhal are carving their own lane in modern heavy rock—visceral, dynamic, and impossible to ignore.
